Joan Lettas, 89, a New Bern resident for 20 years, died June 4 at UNC Hospice in Pittsboro, NC.
Joan moved to New Bern with her husband, Stan, from Kansas City in 1993. In 2013, the pair resettled to the Galloway Ridge Continuing Care Community at Fearrington, near Chapel Hill, NC. Originally from Philadelphia, PA, Joan was raised in Highland Park, IL. She attended Duke University and graduated with honors from Northwestern University. She received her BA in Liberal Arts there in 1951. While in New Bern, Joan helped organize the Greenbrier House and Garden Club, serving on its steering committee for many years, and was active in the Greenbrier Book Club. She also participated in several local bridge groups and was a supporter of several charitable and education activities.
Surviving are her husband and the couple's three married children, Sally MacDonald of Hoover, AL, Kathy Lettas-Cornwall of St. Louis Park, MN, and Caroline Lettas-Cook of Grand Rapids, MI; one sister Barbara Sprague of Lake Forest, IL; five grandchildren; and many nieces & nephews in the Chicago Area.
For memorial remembrances the family requests individual contributions be made to health, charitable, and educational organizations of their choice in honor of Joan. Condolences may be shared at
