NEW BERN - Joseph Diello, 86, of New Bern died Saturday, July 6, 2013.

He was born in Syracuse, N.Y., on July 15, 1926. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1944 to 1946 on the USS Sumter in the South Pacific and earned many WWII medals. He was in the Navy Reserve from 1946 to 1950.

He graduated from Syracuse University in 1952 with an Engineering and Physical Science degree. He retired to New Bern in 1988. While in New Bern he served on the Mayor's Low Income Housing Board, volunteered for the Police Department and consulted as a volunteer on the development of Craven County and New Bern's Geographic Information System (GIS).

He was a member of the New Bern Elks Lodge No. 764, American Legion Post No. 539, Veterans of Foreign War and the New Bern Golf and Country Club. He was an avid golfer and loved boating.

Joe was preceded in death by his son, Joseph.

He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Alvina; two daughters, Gertrude Corelli and Joe-Anne Mitchell and three sons, Patrick, Peter and James; two brothers, William and Fred and one sister, Nancy Hoalcraft; 10 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, July 10, 2013 at Cotten Funeral Home from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. A memorial service with military honors will be held Thursday, July 11, 2013 at 11 a.m. at Cotten Funeral Home Chapel.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to The Veterans Committee, Elks Lodge No. 764, P.O. Box 1284, New Bern, NC 28563.
