POLLOCKSVILLE – Joyce Sledge Griffin was born in Nash County on September 22, 1929 and met her Lord on July 7, 2018. Joyce led a very full and active life with many accomplishments along with raising a family and being a "FULL- TIME GRANDMA" to her grandchildren.
She attended Spring Hope High School as well as UNC-Greensboro. She worked at N.C. State University, where she met her soul mate, Bill. Later they moved to Rocky Mount where she worked with the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad. They moved to Pollocksville where they worked side-by-side on the family farm.
She was an active member of Pollocksville United Methodist Church where she served in numerous capacities. She was a member of the choir for over seventy years, a Sunday School Teacher, United Methodist Women's President, and served as Church Council Chairperson as well as Church Treasurer.
She was a charter member of the Jones County Arts Council, served as President of the Jones County Arts Council, the Jones County Historical Society and was on the Jones County Civic Center Committee. She was active in many civic organizations and received the "Governor's Award for Volunteers."
She served as President of the N.C. Soil and Water Conservation Districts Auxiliary and as President of the National Association of Conservation Districts Southeast Region Auxiliary.
She believed in giving of her time and efforts to help make the world a better place to live. She loved her church, her family and her fellowman.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband William (Bill) V. Griffin as well as her brothers, John and George Sledge.
She leaves behind a devoted family of three sons: William (Billy) V., Jr. and wife Cindy; Herbert and fiancé Dottie Jones; John and wife Linda; and eleven grandchildren: Meredith, Winston, Amy, Tyler, Patricia Joyce (P.J.), Sarah, Adam, Julie, Rebecca, Megan and Logan and twelve great-grandchildren: Nathen, Reagan, Gage, Tyson, Brantlee, Jackson, Allie, Connor, Gatlin, Hunter, Coleson, and Eva; three sisters: Sallaine S. Upchurch and husband Phillip of St. Louis; Mary S. Oriez of Raleigh; and Lois S. Brown and husband, William of Raleigh; sister-in-law, Evelyn Loree along with many nieces and nephews.
The family received friends at Pollock-Best Funeral Home 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. Monday, July 9. The funeral will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, July 10 at Pollock-Best Funeral Home with burial following at New Bern Memorial Cemetery.
