HAVELOCK - Leon Calvin Staton Sr., 78, of 710 Temples Point Road, died Thursday, March 27, 2014, at Cherry Point Bay Rehabilitation Center.
He was a native of Norfolk, Va., retired master sergeant of the U.S. Marine Corps earning the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry, Navy Unit and Meritorious Unit Commendations. He was employed by Carolina Power & Light earning his second retirement and served as an active member of the Harlowe Community Association, Craven County Commissioner, Craven Board of Education, Ten-Twenty Associates, Montford Point Marine Association and former employee of Oscar's Mortuary.
His funeral is 2 p.m. Sunday, April 6, 2014, at Havelock High School Performing Arts Center, 101 Webb Blvd., Havelock with the Rev. Robert Little Jr. officiating and Presiding Elder Avery C. Brown, eulogist. Burial with military honors will follow at Piney Grove AMEZ Church Cemetery.
He is survived by his son, Leon C. Staton Jr. of Laurel, Md.; two daughters, Dorothy L. Staton of Greensboro, Latisha D. Staton-Foster of Havelock; two brothers, James L. Staton of Virginia Beach, Va. and Joseph A. Staton Sr. of Chesapeake, Va.; one sister, Lillie B. Burrows of Stoney Creek, Va.; and two grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the residence. Viewing hours are noon to 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Oscar's Mortuary.
