NEW BERN - Mary Elizabeth Taylor Hodges, 94, resident at Bayview Nursing Center, died peacefully on January 1, 2013. Lib was born in New Bern on January 5, 1918, the daughter of the late John Rose Taylor and Alice Land Taylor. She was predeceased by her husband, James M. Hodges; a sister, Alice Taylor Stanley; and a brother, John R. Taylor Jr.
Lib took great pride in being a native New Bernian and was passionate about her hometown and its history. Having graduated from New Bern High School in 1935, she continued her education at Woman's College of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and received a degree in music in 1939. For many years Lib taught the seventh grade at Central Elementary School until she combined her teaching skills with her love of music and became the elementary music teacher for the local schools. She enjoyed sharing music and interacting with children and composed more than 60 songs for children, many of which were published.
Lib was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend who always put other's needs before her own. She was a charter member of Garber United Methodist Church and participated in the music ministry for many years. Additionally, she was a long standing member of the New Bern Historical Society, the Delta Kappa Gamma Society, and the New Bern Golf and Country Club.
Surviving to cherish her memory are her son, J. M. Hodges Jr. and Cindy Turco of New Bern; a daughter, Elizabeth Hodges White and husband, Lindley, of Wilmington; grandchildren, Elizabeth White Conlon and husband, Brian, of Grayslake, Illinois, C. Lindley White IV and wife, Elizabeth, of Winston-Salem, Anne White Schutte and husband, Jeff and John Taylor White and wife, Shawna, of Wilmington; 10 great-grandchildren and nieces, nephews and many dear friends.
A memorial service will be held at noon on Saturday, January 5, at Garber United Methodist Church with the Reverend David A. Banks officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the church ministry center.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Music Ministry at Garber United Methodist Church, 4201 Country Club Road, New Bern, NC 28562, or the New Bern Historical Society, 511 Broad Street, New Bern, NC 28562.
