TARBORO - Mary Osborne Conover died February 18, 2014 at Vidant Edgecombe Hospital in Tarboro, NC. She was a resident at The Fountains at the Albemarle retirement community where she and her late husband, Jack, became residents in January, 1998. Mr. Conover died in December, 2001.

Born in Ottumwa, Iowa, on January 30, 1925 to Glenn and Jennie Johnson Osborne, Mrs. Conover graduated cum laude from the University of Iowa in 1946 with a degree in journalism. After being employed briefly in Chicago, she moved to New York City to join the public relations agency where she and her husband met.

The Conovers formed their own agency in 1954, with clients including nationally known manufacturers and individuals in fashion, sports, building products, and interior design.

Retiring to New Bern in 1986, both Mr. and Mrs. Conover became active in the community, he as founding chairman of the Down East Chapter of the Service Corps of Retired Executives; she with the Historical Society, Preservation Foundation, Downtown Business & Professional Association, Chamber of Commerce, and Swiss Bear.

Mrs. Conover served on the boards of Craven Concerts and Atlantic Dance Theatre, and was a charter member of Coastal Women's Forum. In Tarboro, she was on the board of EdgecombeARTS.

The Conovers were long-time sailors, trophy-winning sports car rallyists and frequent travelers in the United States and abroad.

There is to be no service. Mrs. Conover's cremains are to be scattered, as were her husband's, near Penfield Light in Long Island Sound. Immediate survivors are a cousin, Julie Mellor Reid, of Alhambra, CA, and a niece, Sandra Conover Bruno, and her husband, Frank, of New Bern.
