VANCEBORO - Mr. Nathaniel Powell Jr., 68, died Sunday, February 3, 2013.

The funeral service will be conducted Friday at 2:30 p.m. in the Wilkerson Funeral Chapel at Vanceboro. Burial will follow in New Bern Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. prior to the service.

Mr. Powell was born and reared in New Bern and served in the U.S. Navy. He was the owner of Powells Garage and Salvage in New Bern. For the past 20 years he made his home in the Vanceboro community. He was a good Christian man whose passion was serving the Lord.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Nathaniel and Margaret Nobles Powell.

He is survived by a son, Larry Nathaniel Powell and wife, Shirley, of Jacksonville, Fla.; a daughter, Natalie Faye Maxey of Cove City, NC; brother, James Stewart Powell of Peachtree City, GA; sister, Elizabeth Temme and husband, Jim, of Palastine, IL; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren; and special friend, Lucille Adams.
