BEAUFORT - Philip Alexander Parker Jr., 59, of 411 Craven St., died Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2013, at Vidant Medical Center.
He was a member of Purvis Chapel AME Zion Church and served as class leader, superintendent of Sunday School, member of the Trustee Board, Men's Choir and Mass Choir. His civic activities included membership in Hero Masonic Lodge No. 248. His cultural and arts involvement included board member of Purvis Inc., member of Purvis Players and Menhaden Chanteymen. He was awarded the N.C. Folk Heritage Award by the N.C. Arts Council and the Order of the Long Leaf Pine by Gov. Beverly Perdue.
His funeral service is 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 29, 2013, at Purvis Chapel AME Zion Church with the Rev. Margaret Blackmon officiating. Ritualistic service by Hero Lodge No. 248 will be conducted at 5 p.m. Saturday, at Oscar's Memorial Chapel followed by visitation of friends and other times at the residence.
He is survived by his wife, Teresa Murray Parker of Beaufort; daughter, Porsha Parker of Greensboro; one sister, Phyllis J. Parker of Beaufort; and one brother, Ray Mitchell Fenderson of Virginia.
