Service will be 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, December 19, 2012, at Pollock-Best Funeral Chapel with Dr. Steve Fitzgerald and the Rev. Danny French officiating. He will be laid to rest with his grandparents in the Hill Family Cemetery at a later date.

Shelton is survived by his son, Brandon Jay Smith and wife, Dannielle, of Rota, Spain; his parents, Ann Turner and husband, the Rev. Perry Turner of Ernul; brothers, Stephen J. Smith of Ernul, Michael C. Smith and wife, Teresa, of Cove City and Craig Smith and wife, Sarah, of Alaska; stepsister, Susan T. Branton of Vanceboro; stepbrother, Perry G. Turner Sr. of New Bern; nieces and nephews, Chris and Chelsea Smith, Tyler and Danielle Smith, Grace and Claire Smith, Bryan Branton, Julie Broadway and Perry G. Turner Jr.; several aunts, uncles, cousins, and seven great nieces and nephews; and his stepmother, Linda Smith of New Bern.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Adolph and Ethel Hill, and his father, Murray J. Smith Jr.
