William Askew Barker


SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - William Askew Barker, 98, died Tuesday, May 7, 2013, in Salt Lake City.

He was born in New Bern on Feb. 8, 1915 and served 23 years in the U.S. Navy, most of them in the Submarine Service all through WWII and most of the Korean War and retired as a chief petty officer. He received an AA degree from Stevens-Henager College and was employed as administrative officer at Dugway Proving Grounds. He was a member of the LDS Church.

He is survived by his wife, Charlotte House Barker; sons, Douglas and William Barker; daughter, Carolyn West; brother, Joseph Barker Jr.; sisters, Helen Berry and Sarah McCallum; 11 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Services were held at noon Wednesday, May 15, at the Salt Lake East Millcreek Stake Center. Interment was held at Wasatch Lawn Cemetery.

Arrangements were by Holbrook Mortuary, Salt Lake City, Utah.
