NEW BERN - William "Bill" Robert Conner Jr., 86, died at his residence on Monday, April 8th.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, April 9, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Pollock-Best Funeral Home. The funeral will be held at Centenary United Methodist Church on Sun., April 14 at 1:30 p.m. Interment will follow at Greenleaf Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Centenary Methodist Church (309 New St., New Bern, NC 28562) or Wesley Methodist Church (711 Spring St., Vienna, VA 22180).
Bill was born on March 14, 1927, in New Bern to Stella Bennett Conner and William "Will" Robert Conner and of New Bern. He was a Scout in Troop 13 under Scoutmaster BM Potter, a member of New Bern High School Class of '44, now known as the Elder Bears, and a member of Centenary United Methodist Church. Bill entered the US Navy on November 1, 1944, serving in the Pacific until transferring to the US Naval Reserve in August 1946 through August of 1951. He was a linotype operator for the Sun Journal Newspaper in New Bern from 1946 until 1952, when he took a position at the United States Government Printing Office in Washington, DC, where he worked for 35 years before retiring in 1987. In March 2005, Bill and his wife moved back to their home in New Bern.
Bill is survived by his wife, Frances Register Conner; three sons, William Robert "Bob" Conner III and his wife, Karen, of Bolivia, N.C., Gary Francis Conner of Harleysville, Pa. and David Alan Conner and his wife Sook of Yorktown, Va.; two daughters, Lisa Conner Pentz and her husband, Richard, of Longmont, Colo. and Susan Conner Huntington and her husband, Blair, of Sterling, Va. He is also survived by eleven grandchildren, Michael Gardner and his wife, Pattie, of Pittsburgh, Pa., Kristie Hales and her husband, Kurt, of Wake Forest, N.C., Sarah Conner of Williamsburg, Va., Brian Pentz and his wife, Christina, Wade Pentz and James Pentz, all of Boulder, Colo., Kathyrn Pentz of Longmont, Colo., Trevor Huntington, Heather Huntington, Joseph Huntington, and Samantha Huntington, all of Sterling, Va.; and seven great-grandchildren, Allie O'Connor, Edward O'Connor, Ethan Gardner, Grace Gardner, and Jessie James, all of Pittsburgh, Pa., and Jacob Hales and Elijah Hales, both of Wake Forest, N.C.
