NEW BERN - Carroll G. Clifton, formerly of Spokane, WA, passed away March 16, 2014 at Vidant Medical Center in Greenville, NC. He had resided in New Bern, NC since March, 2012. Born May 10, 1922 in Tacoma, WA, to Nellie and Fred Clifton, he was predeceased by his beloved wife of 63 years, Lydia Preysler Clifton.
He served in WW II in the US Army in the European Theater where he met his future wife. He received an undergraduate degree from The University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, WA and a masters in Social Work from University of California, Berkeley.
Carroll had a full career as a County Administrator for the Dept. of Social Services for the state of Washington. He was an active Rotarian and enjoyed traveling internationally to the conferences. Camping, fishing, and the great outdoors were his lifelong passions.
He is survived by his sister Margie Carrano of Tacoma, WA, daughter, Claudia (Rusty) Clifton Ura of Oriental, NC, two grandsons, Nathan and Marc Ura, and a niece, Toni Veitenheimer of Tacoma, WA.
The family wishes to express its deepest appreciation to the staff members of Croatan Village Assisted Living in New Bern, NC, where Carroll has resided for the last 2 years.
No memorial service was held. The family requests that donations be made to Alzheimers of Eastern NC at www.alz.org/NC
