He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Rebecca Plemmons Daniels; son, Capt. Edwin H. Daniels Jr., U.S. Coast Guard, Ret., and wife Cyndie of Weston FL; daughters, Nan Elizabeth "Betsy" Daniels of Greenville, NC, Celia Daniels Wheeless and husband Carson of Prospect, KY, and Amy Daniels Burgess-Wise and husband Paul of Kennesaw, GA; and seven grandchildren: Andrew Burgess-Wise, Daniel Burgess-Wise, Matthew Daniels, Timothy Burgess-Wise, David Daniels, Julia Burgess-Wise, and Rebecca Burgess-Wise; brother, LTC Cecil E. Daniels Jr., U.S. Army, Ret., and wife Catherine of Miami, FL and New Bern, NC. He was preceded in death by brothers COL William F. Daniels Sr., U.S. Army, Ret. and LCDR Stephen A. Daniels Sr., USCGR.
Ed graduated from the United States Coast Guard Academy in 1953, second in his class. He lettered in baseball and football and was inducted into the Coast Guard Academy Athletic Hall of Fame. He was known as "The Toe" for his accuracy in kicking points after touchdowns, for which he held the Academy record for 44 years.
He earned a law degree from The George Washington University Law School and was a member of the NC and DC Bar Associations. His last active duty assignment was as Chief Counsel (JAG) of the United States Coast Guard. His favorite assignments were: Commanding Officer, USCGC DILIGENCE in Key West, FL, and Commanding Officer, Support Center, Governors Island, NY.
Following his retirement, Ed practiced law PRO BONO with Pamlico Sound Legal Services. He often said, "I have been given much, and I must give back."
Ed Daniels was an active member of both the Rotary Club of New Bern and Riverdale United Methodist Church for 27 years. Ed was a kind, generous, fair-minded, compassionate, loyal man who will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, July 17, 2014 from 5 to 8 PM at the home.
Funeral Services will be on Friday, July 18, 2014 at 10 AM at Riverdale United Methodist Church followed by a reception in the Fellowship Hall. Burial, with U.S. Coast Guard Honors, will be at 2 PM at Coastal Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Jacksonville. Online condolences may be made at www.pollockbest.com.
