NEW BERN - George Sloan, Jr. , age 86, formerly of Wilmington, NC, passed away on Friday February 25, 2011 at his residence in New Bern.

He was born in Wilmington on March 3, 1924 the son of the late George Sloan Sr. and Mary Council Sloan and was preceded in death by a sister, Annie Katherine Sloan Hart; also a brother, Douglas Council Sloan.

George graduated from New Hanover High School and from the executive program at UNC Chapel Hill. He enjoyed a long career in fertilizer manufacturing, joining Wilmington Fertilizer Company in 1951 and serving as president from 1974 until his retirement in 1989. He was a

scoutmaster in the Boy Scouts and also served on the Boards of Directors of Wilmington Housing Authority and First Union National Bank. He served several years on the Presidential Board of Advisors at Campbell University. Following his retirement George moved to Oriental, NC to pursue his passion for boating. He will be remembered as a kind and good man, a true gentleman, a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. Throughout his life, George was known for his decency, fairness, and generosity.

George is survived by his wife, Kee Wheless Sloan of New Bern, NC; a sister, Mary Sloan Brown of Florence, SC; three sons, George Sloan III of Creedmoor, NC, William B. Sloan and wife, Heidi, of Raleigh, NC and Timothy C. Sloan and wife, Kara, of New Bern, NC; five grandchildren, Alison Sloan, Alex Sloan, Hannah Sloan, Henry Sloan and Ward Sloan.

A celebration of Mr. Sloan's life will be held 2 p.m. on Tuesday, March 1, 2011, at the Garber United Methodist Church, 4201 Country Club Road, New Bern, NC 28560.

The family will receive friends at the church for one hour prior to the service.
