NEW BERN - Mr. Joseph Benedict Riley Jr., 72, passed away Sunday, January 20, 2013.
A native of Upper Darby, Pa., Joe was the son of Dorothy Shackleton Riley and Joseph Riley. He was a graduate of Msgr. Bonner High School, in 1958, and later graduated Magna Cum Laude from East Carolina University with a BS in Business Administration. Joe was Captain of the Philadelphia Paranauts wheelchair basketball team in the 60s when a football injury put him in the Johnstown Rehab Center for nearly a year. He worked for Philadelphia Gear, in King of Prussia, Pa., before moving to New Bern 38 years ago to work for the New Bern Sun Journal, and also owned and operated Two Bit Book Store. Joe was an avid reader and enjoyed playing chess and poker. Joe was preceded in death by his parents, and his wife of 45 years, Shirley Hicks Riley.

Joe is survived by his son, Joseph B. Riley III of Vanceboro; daughters, Shirley Anne McCulley, of Hawkinsville, Ga., Kathleen R. Bland of Wilmington and Linda Michele Hamilton of New Bern; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, Michael Riley, of Havertown, Pa.; sisters, Patricia R. Reavy of Pottstown, Pa., Dorothy R. Steele of Honey Brook, Pa., Michele R. Ferguson of West Chester, Pa., and Linda R. Callaway of Honey Brook, Pa.
