SALEM, S.C. - Commander John Frank Rabai, 91, of Salem died Thursday, March 7, 2013, at the Cottingham Hospice House in Seneca, S.C.
John was born, April 3, 1921 in Baltimore, MD, the son of John B. and Mary Vicarini Rabai. He attended Baltimore City College and the University of Maryland where he was a member of Sigma Chi and played lacrosse. He was a veteran of WWII serving in the U.S. Navy aboard a mine sweeper on New Hebredis, Islands. Following 4 years of active duty Commander Rabai served 20 years in the US Naval Reserves.
He is survived by three children, Gina Rabai Clair (Edward) of Chevy Chase, MD, John Charles Rabai of Ponchatola, LA and Stephen Phillip Rabai of Columbia, MD; and five grandchildren.
He is also survived by his wife, Gail Hollingsworth (Duggan) Rabai and his stepchildren, Charles A. Duggan III of Macon, GA, Holly Duggan Broyles of Atlanta, GA, Kathleen Duggan McKinney of Macon, GA and Robert Keller Duggan of Baton Rouge, LA; and six stepgrandchildren.
Commander Rabai loved the Navy, supported the Navy Memorial, enjoyed his family, traveling, working with wood, sailing, bridge, cribbage and golf. He was the Commander for the Fairtide Harbor Yacht Club. John was a member of First Presbyterian Church in New Bern and most recently Fort Hill Presbyterian Church in Clemson, S.C.
Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Sunday, at Fort Hill Presbyterian Church in Clemson, S.C. with the Rev. Laura Conrad officiating.
The family will receive friends immediately following the service in Tartan Hall at the church.
