Gurman G. Kennedy is survived by his wife Joyce Kennedy; daughter, Barbara Kennedy of Tampa, Fla.; son, Gurman G. Kennedy Jr. and wife Karen of Beaulaville, N.C.; son, Sherman Joseph Kennedy and wife Billie of Richlands, N.C.; son, Thurman James Kennedy and wife Lois of Richlands, N.C.; daughter, Susan Futrelle and husband Greg of Gardendale, Ala.; stepson, Dwayne Little and wife Lori of New Bern, N.C.; stepdaughter, Terry King and husband Wyatt of Las Cruces, N.M.; brother, Sherman Kennedy of Chinquapin, N.C. He is also survived by 15 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, and his best friend, Rocky, a chocolate lab.

Gurman spent 20 yrs and 2 months in the U.S. Army where he received an Army Commendation Medal, National Defense Service 1st OLC, Vietnam Campaign Medal w/60 Device, 2 Bronze Star Medals, 6 Good conduct Medals, Army Commendation Medal 1st OLC, the European Occupation Medal and the Japanese Occupation Medal. He served in an elite group of soldiers called "Crazy Cats" that recently became declassified and was a member of the Armed Forces Security Agency.

Gurman also served as the chief of police in Richlands as well as River Bend, N.C. for 17 years. He was a master mason at Lodge No. 564 in Richlands, N.C. Gurman was a recipient of the Long Leaf Pine Award form the state of North Carolina for his genuine humanitarian service of great integrity and honor.

Gurman never met a stranger and had a unique gift of generosity that he used in his life locally and shared with others on a global level.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Friday at Pollock-Best Funeral Home just prior to the funeral service which will be at 5:30 p.m. in the funeral home chapel. Interment will be 11 a.m. Saturday, April 20, 2013 at Greenleaf Memorial Park with military honors.
