Gertha Henderson Williams


NEW BERN - Gertha Henderson Williams, 83, of 4910 Cypress Shores Drive, died Friday, April 19, 2013, at CarolinaEast Medical Center.

She received a BS degree from North Carolina Central University and an MS degree in social work from Hunter College, New York. Her career path included social worker for New York Department of Social Services and the New York City Department of Hospitals; assistant social worker director, Lincoln Community Health Center, Durham; mental health therapist-Neuse Mental Health Center, 3HC of Maysville.

Her past and present civic affiliations included Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Craven Council on Women, Eastern Carolina Area on Aging Board, Meals on Wheels and MERCI Clinic volunteer, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and Neuse-Pamlico Sound Women's Coalition. She held membership at St. Peter's AME Zion Church, serving as class leader, president of the Missionary Society and member of Women's Ministry.

Her funeral service will be conducted at noon Wednesday, April 24, 2013, at St. Peter's AME Zion Church with the Rev. Robert Kelley Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in New Bern Memorial Cemetery.

She is survived by her daughter, Darlene Little of Knightdale; son, Michael Henderson of New Bern; and one granddaughter.

Theta Beta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority ritualistic service will be conducted Tuesday 6 p.m. at Oscar's Mortuary, followed by visitation of friends until 7 p.m., and other times at the residence. Online condolences are accepted at
