Erica Brooks

PHILADELPHIA, PA — Erica Laverne Brooks, daughter of Eugene and Evelyne Brooks, was born in Newberry, SC on May 24, 1971, and departed this life on April 2, 2014 at the University of Penn Medical Hospital in Philadelphia, PA.

Erica graduated from Mid-Carolina High School in 1989 with honors. She then attended Claflin College in Orangeburg, SC on a full academic scholarship. She graduated Magna Cum Laude in 1993 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry. While there, she became a member of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.

From June 1993 to August 1995, Erica attended Graduate School at Ohio State University in Columbus, OH majoring in Analytical Chemistry.

At an early age, Erica joined Hannah AME Church in Newberry, SC where she was a member of the Youth Choir, Junior Stewards, Junior Ushers, and the Young Peoples Department (YPD). On September 10, 2011, Erica joined Hickman Temple AME Church in Philadelphia, PA where she was a member of the Praise Team, Gospel Choir, Mass Choir, Trustee Board, Media Ministry, and performed other activities within the church. Erica was also an active member of the Women's Home Aid Society #16.

Erica was a wise and intelligent person with the spiritual gift of discernment. She was a very generous, loving, and kind woman who had no limits when it came to helping others. Her spirit was luminous, shining brightly wherever she went. There was no place she went where she did not leave a lasting impression and made a lifelong friend. Erica was loved by all who came into contact with her.

Professionally, Erica was a Quality Control Director in the Pharmaceutical Manufacturing industry. She held many prominent positions at Roxanne Laboratories, Inc., Johnson and Johnson, and Compliance Implementation Services. Her career gave her the opportunity to be a Co-Author for many Quality Review Article Publications, and to follow one of her passions, which was travelling to foreign countries.

Although diagnosed with TTP in 2010, she never let the illness stop her from being used by God. It fueled her passion to help others like never before. So beloved by the medical professionals around her, she was asked to speak and write about her experience living with TTP at the Ree Wynn Foundation.

Erica had a zeal for God, life, family and friends. She leaves to cherish her loving memories: parents, Eugene and Evelyne Brooks; siblings, Prentiss (Delia) Brooks, Columbia, SC; Capricious E. Brooks; Belinda Bates, Forest City, NC; and Melvin (Johnette) Pitts; four aunts, five uncles, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and special friends.

Funeral service will be conducted on Saturday, April 12, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at Bethlehem Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Hannah AME Church cemetery. Visitation will be Friday evening from 6-8 p.m. at Pratt Funeral Home Chapel will the Omega Omega Service.
