Billy R. Smith

Marion, N.C. — Billy R. Smith, 87, of Marion, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2013 at Memorial Campus of Mission Hospital, his loving family was by his side. Born in Cabarrus County, N.C. on Sept. 11, 1926, he was the son of the late Forrest Franklin Smith and Novella Virgie Jones Smith. Billy played for the St. Louis Cardinals during the late 1940's and the early 1950's and also worked as an engineer with the Atomic Energy Commission in Aiken.

He was an avid golfer; earning his PGA card and turning Pro in the mid 1960's. Following his professional golfing career, Mr. Smith was the Golf and Teaching Pro at the Ponderosa Club in Batesburg, SC and later as Club Pro at the Mid-Carolina Club in Prosperity, SC. He served on the Horticulture Advisory Council with Midlands Technical College in Columbia, SC.

Billy was a member of East Marion United Methodist Church and as a veteran of the U.S. Army, he served in Germany during WWII. In addition to his parents, Mr. Smith is preceded in death by his wife, Otha Berry Smith; three siblings, Ruth Smith, Guy Smith and Frances Lewis.

Left to cherish his memory are two daughters, Sharon Smith of Lexington, SC and Kathryn Welch of Smyrna, GA; one grandson, Steve Smith of Huntersville, NC and Billy's first wife, Nadine Marshall French of Lexington, SC, also survives.

A private funeral service will be held Friday, Dec. 13, 2013 at 11 a.m. in the Chapel of Westmoreland Funeral Home with Billy's nephew, Dr. Michael Smith, pastor of Fruitland Baptist Church, officiating. Mr. Smith's close friends are welcome to pay their respects prior to the service. Interment will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery with military honors provided by the Rutherford County Honor Guard.
