PROSPERITY — Wirt H. Jennings, Jr., 86, of Prosperity, died Wednesday, April 23, 2014 at Palmetto Health Richland.

Born on Oct. 5, 1927 in Newberry, a son of the late Wirt H. Jennings, Sr. and Dorothy "Dot" Suber Jennings Carter.

Wirt graduated from Newberry College in 1949 and graduated from Lyndhurst University in 1958. He was a Navy veteran of WW II. He retired from Exxon Corp as a marketing executive in 1985. After his retirement, he served as President of Marketing Expeditors in Houston, TX.

He was a member of Central United Methodist Church, was a founding member and Past President of the West Columbia JCs, was a former President of the Exxon Annuitant Club, was a member of the Big Thursday Club, and a former member of the Newberry College Board of Trustees. He was a longtime Chairman of the Newberry County Republican Party and was a former member of the Newberry County Council.

His first love was his family and then fishing, hunting and golf.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years. Lucille "Lou" Braswell Jennings; daughters, Marti Hovater of Houston, TX and Dottie Moore of Memphis, TN; grandchildren; Louanne Hovater , Sean Hovater, Christopher Hovater, and Seth Hovater; Kyle Moore and Justin Moore; great grandchildren, Skyler Moore and Ava Grace Merritt; and brothers, Jack Jennings of Newberry and Bryant (Pat) Jennings of Prosperity. He was predeceased by sons, Robert Holman Jennings and Michael Earl Jennings and a sister, Martha Jennings Conder.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Central United Methodist Church by the Rev. Tresco Shannon. Interment will be in Rosemont Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Whitaker Funeral Home. At other times, they will be at the residence, 51 Jennings Point, Prosperity.

His grandchildren will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Buren Mitchel, Harvey Kinard, Senator Ronnie Cromer, Mac MacDonald, Ed Zobel, Alan Gardner, and his former co-workers with Exxon.
