Knowles, Geraldine
Geraldine (Hulton) Knowles died peacefully at home on Tuesday July 29, 2014. Gerri was born in New Milford on April 1, 1923 to Mary and James Hulton. She grew up in New Milford and graduated from St Francis School, New Milford High School and Becker College in Worcester, MA. After graduation she worked as a medical secretary at the Institute of Living in Hartford but returned to New Milford during the War and was employed as secretary to the Superintendent at the State Board of Education office.
Gerri married Donald M. Knowles on October 19, 1946. Together they raised three children and Gerri became active in their activities including Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, and St. Francis School Guild.
After eighteen years Gerri returned to work as a medical transcriptionist in the Radiology Department at New Milford Hospital. She retired in 1988 after twenty-five years. She was a past member of the American Medical Transcriptionist Association.
In retirement Gerri enjoyed many weekends and vacations at their Cottage at Quonochontaug Beach in Charlestown, RI. Gerri's favorite pastimes were reading, needlework, puzzles and trips to their belovedQuonnie. She was a member of St. Francis Xavier Church.
She was predeceased by a son, Donald H. Knowles in December of 2003 and by her husband of fifty seven years, Donald M. Knowles in January of 2004.
She is survived by her daughters, Deborah K. Hancock and husband Craig of East Hartford, CT and Janet K. Erhart and husband Lawrence of Gales Ferry, CT; five grandchildren, Jeffrey Erhart and wife Amy, Daniel, and Laura Erhart, Sarah Martin and husband Josh, and Katherine Therrien and husband Tony; three great-grandchildren , Kevin, Jenna, and Isabella. She is also survived by a brother, Paul Hulton of New Milford and two sisters, Elizabeth Peyron of New Milford and Catherine Schaffer of Ashford, CT; and many nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, August 2, 2014, 12 Noon at St. Francis Xavier Church, New Milford, CT. Burial will take place at a later time at St. Francis Cemetery, New Milford.
Friends may call on Friday, August 1, from 5 to 8 PM at the Lillis Funeral Home, 58 Bridge Street, New Milford, CT.
Contributions in her memory may be made to the New Milford Fire Department, New Milford Ambulance or New Milford VNA-Hospice.
