Albert William Billington Obituary
SEEKONK, MASS. - Albert William Billington, known to friends as "Big Al", peacefully passed away at his home in Dumfries, Virginia, on Monday, April 23, 2018 at the age of 64 years. Albert had been battling a rare form of brain cancer since his diagnosis in January 2017.

A native of Attleboro, Massachusetts, Albert was born on December 5, 1953 to Albert Joseph Billington and Margaret Rita (Boulais) Billington. Albert attended Northeastern University in Boston, graduating in 1977 with a bachelor's degree in criminal justice.

Shortly thereafter, he began a career in law enforcement as a police officer, in Texas, with the Port Arthur Police Department, serving with distinction and receiving the American Legion Silver Star of Valor in 1979.

In 1981, Albert started his career as a Special Agent with the Naval Criminal Investigative Service
(NCIS) in San Francisco, California.

Soon afterward, he served a one-year assignment as the Special Agent Afloat aboard the USS Enterprise (CVN 65). During his tour, he led several high-profile investigations while the ship and battle group were deployed in the Western Pacific. Later in his career, Albert was recognized with several awards which included the Navy Superior Civilian Service Award for outstanding performance as the Special Agent in Charge of the NCIS Middle East Field Office in Bahrain during a time of heightened alert and terrorist activity. Albert later retired as the Special Agent in Charge of the NCIS Washington, DC, Field Office, remaining highly active in the law enforcement community.

Albert will be remembered as a man of many talents. He was an avid musician and guitar player; an accomplished athlete in both judo and football; a seafaring skipper of the New England shoreline; and a master negotiator with an outgoing and social personality.

He enjoyed playing baseball and football with his son and was a passionate fan of the Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots.
Albert loved his family, friends, and two golden retrievers unconditionally.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Michelle Taninecz; his son, Matthew; his stepdaughters Rachel and Emily; his stepson, Jonathan; his sisters Barbara (Pete) Lannigan and Bonnie Billington; his brother Joseph Billington; and cherished cousins, nephews, nieces, and friends.

A celebration of life gathering will be held privately in both Rhode Island and Virginia. To honor Albert's memory, donations can be sent to the American Brain Tumor Association at abta.org.
