Burgess, Anne M. (Royce)*
Anne M. (nee Royce) Bugess died peacefully on her birthday (August 26, 2015) in her seaside cottage in Brant Rock, Mass., where she summered for over 60 years and lived year-round since 2002. She was born on August 26,1919. A resident of Willoughby since she married the late Clifford Thomas Burgess in 1940, she was a community leader, serving on the Board of Directors of the Lake County YMCA, leading Girl Scout Troops, Cub Scout Dens, Tri-Hi Y clubs, and most famously, running the adult and junior rifle clubs at the West End YMCA for over twenty years. In addition to her volunteer work, Anne Burgess was active in local politics, regularly attending Willoughby City Council meetings, campaigning for the candidates of her choice, and fighting for issues she believed in. Despite her tiny stature, she was a dynamic force in any room. In her private life, her interests were diverse and her accomplishments impressive. A lover of United States history, she was an avid reader and traveler to historic sites throughout the country. She was passionate about her painting and her mastery of textile arts was unmatched. Many a young mother in Willoughby was the recipient of hand crocheted baby blankets and sweaters. Many a neighbor received the bounty of her kitchen. An equestrian in her younger years, she never lost her love for nature and being outdoors, especially at the ocean. Survivors include five children (Clifford T. Burgess, Jr. of Linden, VA, Donald F. Burgess of Brant Rock, MA, Barbara Burgess-Van Aken of University Heights, OH, Jean Burgess of Westminster, Md., and Mimi Burgess-Todd of Tiffin, OH), six grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. A memorial service will occur for family only. Gifts in her memory can be made to the Clift Rogers Free Library at 540 Pleasant Street, P.O. Box 168, Marshfield Hills, MA 02051 or Cranberry Hospice c/o Philanthropy Office Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital-Plymouth, 275 Sandwich St. Plymouth, MA 02360.
