Bernard A. Taylor

Bernard A. Taylor, 85, of Chardon, OH died on December 7, 2012, at Geauga Community Hospital.
Bernard "Bernie" was born September 15, 1927 in Toledo, OH to Elmer J. and Mary Ellen (May) Taylor and married Catherine "Cathie" (Richardson) Taylor on June 29, 1952 in Chardon, OH. Bernie and Cathie had met and courted at Ohio State University and were lifelong fans of OSU football and basketball. He was proud to tell people he was at Ohio State before Woody Hayes.
Bernard graduated from Toledo Waite High School in 1945 and enlisted in the US Navy. He served in Panama as a radio repairman until discharged in 1948. He earned an Education Degree in Industrial Arts from Ohio State and moved to Chardon in 1952. He began his career in Education in Bainbridge (Kenston) Schools, later taught Industrial Arts, Jr. High Mathematics, and Driver's Education in Chardon. As his career progressed, he earned his Administration Certificate, became Principal at Cardinal Schools, Superintendent of Ledgemont Schools and retired in 1985 as Director of Vocational Education for Geauga County.
He was always very active and had many favorite activities, including, Lions Club, Boy Scout leader, cutting and splitting firewood, wood working, fishing, selling maple syrup, operating a concession trailer with close friend Rich Gahr, genealogical research, and traveling.
Bernie and Cathie were Good Sam Club Members and over the years they traveled in their 5th wheel camper to all 50 States, all Provinces and Territories of Canada and all but one of the countries of Central America. In addition, they wintered for 27 years in the Rio Grande Valley in South Texas where they enjoyed crafting as well as raising grapefruit, oranges and lemons. Many friends and family enjoyed the grapefruit when they returned to Chardon in April each year.
He is survived by two sons, Mark & Cathy Taylor of Radnor, OH and Glen & Carol Taylor of Andover, OH; two grandchildren and a great-granddaughter; a sister, Marilyn (Taylor) McAfee of Temperance, MI; and a sister-in-law, Charlotte Taylor of Cambridge, MA.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 59 years Catherine Taylor on March 17, 2012; a brother, Marvin Taylor; and his parents.
Mark, Glen and their families will receive family and friends at the Pilgrim Christian Church, 202 South Hambden St., Chardon, OH, 44024 on Saturday, April 20, 2013, from 12:00 Noon until 1:00 PM. A Celebration of Life Service for Bernard and Catherine will follow the visitation. Interment of the cremains will be at Chardon Municipal Cemetery, 201 Park Avenue, Chardon Ohio.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the organization of your choice in Bernard's name.
