James J. Barbiere(1917-2012)

Funeral Mass for James J. Barbiere, 95, of Mentor, will be 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary of the Assumption Church, 8540 Mentor Ave., Mentor. Fr. Tom Elsasser will officiate the Mass.
Mr. Barbiere passed away Thursday, Dec. 6, 2012, at Hospice House of the Western Reserve in Cleveland with his family at his side.
Born May 25, 1917, in Pottsville, Pa., he had been a lifetime Lake County resident living in Wickliffe and Eastlake before moving to Mentor.
James was noted in the community as an artist, gardener, woodworker and dedicated perpetual adorer of St. Mary's Adoration Chapel. He also was a gourmet chef, who provided his family with three-course meals ending with homemade pies and cakes. What he had he generously shared with others. He loved golfing and Cleveland sports teams.
He graduated from Wickliffe High School and furthered his education at the Cleveland School of Art, where he was selected to use his talents for Walt Disney. He chose his family and hometown instead.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in Europe and Africa and most recently took part in ""Honor Flight.""
Mr. Barbiere retired from Cleveland Twist Drill as a machinist and was a member of St. Mary's of the Assumption Church in Mentor.
He was the loving father of James J. (Sherry) Barbiere Jr. of Willoughby, Janice J. (Bill) Schrag of Cuyahoga Falls and Joan J. (Bill) Houston of Sanford, N.C.; cherished grandfather of Karen and Chris Barbiere, Daniel (Sarah) Schrag, Jacob Banes and Gretchen Houston; great-grandfather of Marie and Ben; brother of Carmen Luciani of Willoughby; and uncle of many loving nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Anita (Borrelli) Barbiere; parents, Adam and Filomena (Santella) Luciani; siblings, Theresa Fatica and Maggie Wilbur; and great-granddaughter, Anna.
Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Monday at
McMahon-Coyne-Vitantonio Funeral Home, 38001 Euclid Ave., Willoughby. Burial will be in Mentor Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in his name be made to Hospice of the Western Reserve, 17876 St. Clair Ave., Cleveland, OH 44110, or Lake County Council on Aging, 8520 East Ave., Mentor, OH 44060.
