Shirl J. Hoffman, 94, of Huntsburg, passed away Saturday morning, Dec. 14, 2013, at his residence with his family by his side.
Mr. Hoffman was born June 26, 1919, in Venango County, Pa., to John Clyde and Sara Armeda (Adams) Hoffman.
Mr. Hoffman graduated in 1937 from Wesley High School in Venango County, Pa., as valedictorian of his class. He was a self-employed tool and die maker for many years.
Mr. Hoffman served in the U.S. Army
Air Corps from 1942 to 1945. He was a flight engineer and top turret gunner flying 25 missions with the crew of the Betty Boop and the Pistol Packin' Mama, a B-17 bomber. He is the last of the crew members to pass away. Mr. Hoffman was very proud of his service to his country.
His hobbies and activities included hunting, fishing, bowling and working with heavy equipment. He was also a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles.
Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Ima Jean (Jones) whom he married Sept. 14, 1946; children, Nancy (Sid) Saunders of Huntsburg, Sandy (Richard) Gotham of Uniontown, Barb (Tom) Birks of Sonora, Calif., Susan Hoffman of Middlefield, Chuck (Sally Hall) Hoffman of Leesburg, Ga., and Patty (Dave) Fulop of Middlefield; 16 grandchildren, Adam (Cassie) Saunders, Vanessa (Mike) Vacarro, Heather (Rocky) Fresh, Michele (Bob Csontos) Saunders, Rob (Melanie) Gotham, Angela (Brian) Holmes, Aaron (Megan) Gotham, Erick (Tamara) Gotham, Kristopher (Terri) Wilson, Kevin (Melissa) Wilson, Michael Hoffman, Carrie Brewer, Chaz Hoffman, Toni Rae Hoffman, Alex and Lucas Fulop; and 23 great-grandchildren.
Shirl was preceded in death by his parents and 10 siblings.
Funeral Services will be 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 20, 2013, at the Russell Funeral Service, 15670 W. High St. (Route 87), Middlefield. Burial will be in the Huntsburg Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 19, 2013, at the funeral home.
