Stephen J. Szalma, 38, of Kandiyohi, Minn., died unexpectedly Saturday, Jan. 4, 2014, in Willmar, Minn., from injuries sustained in a car accident.
Steve was born Feb. 1, 1975, in Cleveland, the son of Joe and Barbara (Ourednik) Szalma. He grew up in Mentor and graduated from Mentor High School. Steve began his lifelong career at Hiram College and then went on to earn his doctorate degree at the University of Missouri-Columbia.
Steve was employed by the pioneer seed division of Dupont Demour, working in the field of corn genetics.
Steve will be remembered for his kind and gentle personality, and was never afraid to give of himself to help and support others. He enjoyed manicuring his yard, and was an avid fisherman, hunter, music lover and musician.
He is survived by his father, Joe of Mentor; sister, Karen Szalma; grandmother, Alice Ourednik; uncle, Dave Ourednik; aunt, Sue (Ourednik) Dishong; his life partner, Stacy Gilberts; and her children, Codie and Kaleigh.
Steve was preceded in death by his mother, Barbara and is now with her again.
As per his wishes, no services will be held.
