Thomas E. McMaster Jr., 92, of Painesville, passed away May 25, 2013, in Raleigh, N.C.
He was born Sept. 23, 1920, in Cleveland, to the late Thomas E. and Florence McMaster.
Tom was the eldest of 12 children. He graduated from Chester Township School in 1939. He enlisted in the U.S. Army
Air Force, where he met his future bride, Joann L. Merrick, from Ada, Okla. They married July 5, 1944, in Denton, Texas. They settled in Painesville and raised three daughters, Cheryl June (William T.) Creel, Cynthia (Dr. Richard) McBurney and Joan Ellen (Gale) Ebert.
Tom was a brick mason by trade, and also very involved in the bricklayers union. He retired from bricklaying and became an inspector for the Lake County Building Department and after 10 years retired for good. Tom and Joann enjoyed their retirement with traveling and were avid square dancers. They spent winters in Florida and Arizona, enjoying seeing family and friends. Tom was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was a friend to many and lived life to the fullest. He is greatly missed by all who knew him.
He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Joann; three daughters, Cheryl, Cindy and Joan; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; sisters, Janice, Gloria, Mary and Linda; brothers, Robert, Richard and Walter; and many nephews and nieces.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas E. and Florence McMaster; brothers, William, John and Joseph; and sister, Elizabeth.
There will be no funeral service, consistent with Tom's wishes. There will be a celebration of his life 1 p.m. Monday, Sept. 23, 2013, which is Tom's 93rd birthday, at The Painesville Methodist Church.
