Dr. Aili J. Hakojarvi

Dr. Aili J. Hakojarvi went to be with the Lord on January 3, 2014. She was born on September 23, 1919, in Fairport Harbor and was a lifetime member of Zion Lutheran Church. Her grandparents, Alex and Maria Sironen, were part of the original 73 people who organized the Suomi Church which is now the Zion Lutheran Church.
Dr. Hakojarvi was preceded in death by her father, Victor Hakojarvi; her mother, Selma Sironen Hakojarvi; two brothers, Arland (Russ Harmon) Hakojarvi and Afvar (David) Hakojarvi.
She is survived by her sister Arlene (and John) Quinn; niece, Carole McBride; nephew, David P. Hakojarvi; niece, Darlene Hakojarvi; great niece, Shannon Marro; great nephews, Jeffrey Hakojarvi, and David S. Hakojarvi.
Dr. Hakojarvi received her Bachelor's Degree from Ohio State University, Master's Degree from Case Western Reserve, and her Doctoral Degree in education from Columbia University. She taught at Harding High and Riverside High for 18 years.
She was a Home Economics agent with the Ohio State University Agricultural Extension Service for 2 years, Assistant Professor at Case Western Reserve, Associate Professor at the State University of New York at Plattsburg, and a Department Chairman and Professor of Nutrition at State University. After 15 years of teaching college Dr. Hakojarvi retired from Youngstown State University with the honorary status of Professor Emeritus.
Memorial services will be 2 p.m. on Wednesday, April 23, at Zion Lutheran Church, 504 Eagle Street, Fairport Harbor. Officiating will be Rev. Hannu Vepsalainen.
