John Konitsky Obituary

John Konitsky Jr., 81, entered his eternal life on Saturday, June 4, 2011. After recently being treated for cancer, John passed away peacefully at home.
He was born Oct. 7, 1929, in Bakerton, Pa.
He was 18 years old when he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He was proud of his service and that of others. He was a member of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, the VFW, American Legion, Disabled Veterans, NRA. After his discharge he began a collection of military memorabilia that put him in touch with people all over the world. John was a people person and enjoyed corresponding with family, friends and new acquaintances via handwritten letter and later via e-mail.
He moved to Cleveland in 1955 and then he and his wife were residents of Lake County for 44 years.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing and the outdoors in general. He had many hidden talents, one of which was haircutting. He had a special knack for being able to fix just about anything. He was particularly passionate about his flowers and trees, samplings of which he would give to neighbors and friends. He and his wife, Gemma, enjoyed going to Las Vegas and visiting nearby casinos. John was a generous and kind man whose love for his family and friends was beyond measure. His kind, quiet, gentle nature made others always feel at ease. He was a devoted father and grandfather and knew he was loved. He touched many lives and his family is grateful to be left with many beautiful memories.
John worked many years at National Acme Co. in Cleveland as an electrical design engineer.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Gemma (Vergerio); sons, John (Connie), Tom (Morna) Konitsky; daughter, Lynn Ann (Mike) Waters; brothers, Andy (Mary), Frank (Dotty); sisters, Evelyn Konitsky, Madeline Fryer and Rosalyn (Bob) Fryer; grandchildren Theresa, Johnny, Jessica, Gus, Micheal and Lily; many nieces, nephews and his close neighborhood friends.
He was preceded in death by his father, John Konitsky Sr. and mother, Mary (Chalkey) Konitsky.
The family will receive friends from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at Brunner Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 8466 Mentor Ave., Mentor.
Memorial service will follow 8:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Inurnment will be in Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery in Rittman.

Dear Gemma & Family, We were so sorry to hear of John's passing. Our prayers go out to you in this time of sorrow. My husband, Walter & I always enjoyed our visits with John in the past years. Walter was a fellow militaria collector and he and John had many hours of fun sharing in each others collectable items. God Bless your family.

Gemma, John, Tommy, Lynn Ann: So many memories of Johnny, as Gemma called him, I think! He helped us raise our sons, shared knowledge of flowers, vegetables, always greeted me when we were both outside! So many times, he always had something nice to say, always!!! Remember the frozen deer that stood in front of your home for a couple of days? That was a hoot and Mr. Konitsky gave us many, many laughs. I type "Mr." with pride.
