Joseph J. Cardina, 89, of Mentor, passed away Thursday, June 6, 2013, at Lake Health West Medical Center in Willoughby. He was born Aug. 1, 1923, in Painesville, before moving to Mentor over 50 years ago.
Mr. Cardina was a longtime member of St. Mary of the Assumption Church in Mentor. He attended St. Mary's Catholic School in Painesville, was a 1942 graduate of Thomas W. Harvey High School and spent two years at the Cleveland College of the Western Reserve.
A WWII U.S. Army veteran of the European Theatre and the Battle of the Bulge for which he received a Purple Heart. He was employed in the corporate offices of the Nickel Plate Railroad (now Norfolk and Western Railway) until he retired in 1983.
Joseph is survived by his loving sisters, Lucille ""Lou"" Komendat, Geraldine ""Jerry"" Moritz and Rose (Richard) Shupp; and dear brother James ""Lee"" (Marge) Cardina. He also leaves his wonderful nephew and best friend, Michael Moritz; and nieces Jeanne (Stan) Dobrzeniecke and Linda (Lee) Miller; great-nieces, Keri (Brad) Kish and Jamie Miller; and great-great-niece and -nephew, Rylee and Evan Kish.
He was preceded in death by his loving parents, Rocky and Antoinette Cardina; sister, Nancy Oinonen; brothers-in-law, Sulo Oinonen, Tony Komendat and Joseph Moritz
At Joseph's request, a private service was held at St. Mary Cemetery in Painesville. The family asks that all remember Joe in your own special way.
