Charles E. Cannon, 85, a longtime attorney from Painesville, passed away Monday, March 18, 2013, at his residence.
Born March 1, 1928, in Perry, he spent most of his life in Painesville.
He was a 1946 graduate of Painesville Harvey High School, where he participated in basketball, football, student government and was a member of the National Honor Society. After attending the University of Dayton and John Carroll University, he obtained his Juris Doctor from the John Marshall College of Law in 1954. He also served in the United States Army from 1946 to 1948.
He started his career as a claims adjuster for Nationwide Insurance Company before opening his law practice with Wayne Milburn in 1956. He served as a member of the Painesville City Planning Commission and many years as president of the Painesville City Council. He later served as law director for the City of Eastlake and the City of Painesville.
He was a longtime member of the Lake County Bar Association, having served as president and trustee. He received the Presidents Award from the association in 2005, and was a founding member of the Lake County Bar Association Foundation. He also was a member of the American Bar Association, the Ohio Bar Association, and a fellow of the Ohio Bar Foundation.
Charles was deeply involved in many significant community affairs. He was honored in 2004 as the Painesville Area Chamber of Commerce Man of the Year, and in 2005 was inducted into the Harvey High School Hall of Fame. He was a founding member of Leadership Lake County, the Lakeland Foundation, and the Lake County Blue Coats. He served as a board member of the United Way of Lake County, the Fairport Port Authority, the Lake Metropolitan Housing Authority, Deepwood, past president of Sheltered Industries, past president of the Painesville Exchange Club and many other civic organizations.
Charles served as a director of the State Bank and Trust Company, the Citizens Savings and Loan, and a consulting director of BancOhio, a board member at Madison Country Club, and life member of the
A devout Catholic, he was a member of Saint Gabriel Parish, a past member of the Catholic Educational Endowment Commission, St. Mary Church Council, the St. Mary and St. Gabriel church choirs, and the Painesville Knights of Columbus, 4th Degree.
His distinguished career as an attorney was marked by an unsurpassed devotion to professionalism and service to his clients. A gentleman always, he was very proud to include in his stable a broad spectrum of clients ranging from wealthy leaders to people in need who just didn't happen to be so fortunate.
His lifelong devotion to his family was without equal. Survivors are Susan, his wife of over 60 years; six children, Cathy Haworth of Naples, Fla., Karen (Jim) Metz of Mentor, Tom (Maryanne) Cannon of Port Charlotte, Fla., Judy (Rick) Levin of Oshkosh, Wis., Tim (Lisa) Cannon of Painesville and Jim (Mary) Cannon of Pittsford, N.Y.; grandchildren, Mike (Paula) Metz, Julie Metz, Phillip Metz, Jennifer Metz, Alicia Levin, Amy Levin, Tom Levin, Geoff (Bonnie) Cannon, Sarah Cannon, Maryn Cannon, Terese Cannon and Hannah Cannon; great-grandchildren, Andrew, Alex and Lillian Metz; brother, Joseph B. (Pat) Cannon of Painesville; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Lillian Cannon; sisters, Ann Gibbons, Margaret (Bob) Colopy and Martha Pyne, son-in-law, Leo Robert Haworth; brothers-in-law, Bob Gibbons and Bill Pyne; and nephew, Charles J. Cannon.
The family will receive family and friends from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, March 21, at Saint Gabriel Church, 9925 Johnnycake Ridge Road, Concord Township.
A Funeral Mass celebrating the life of Charles will be 10 a.m. Friday, March 22, at the church.
