Charles H. Maffett, age 87, of Deland, Fla., passed away Saturday, Nov. 10, 2012, in Illinois.

He was born June 24, 1925, in Toronto, Ohio.
Mr. Maffett was an x-ray weld specialist at Lincoln Electric for many years prior to his retirement.
He was a U.S. Army veteran, who honorably served in The Philippines in World War II, where he received two Bronze Stars and two Purple Hearts. He was also a 32nd degree Mason.
He, along with Olney Nicholas, Dan Tedic, Art Hinkle and Robert Korfmann were instrumental in starting The Mentor Recreation Baseball program, which is still in existence today. They also modernized fields and made it possible for many youngsters to have a top notch environment to develop their skills. He was also an avid golfer, slow pitch softball player and umpire.
Survivors are his wife, Mary Ann; son, Randy Maffett of Illinois; 10 loving grandchildren; and eight loving great-grandchildren; sister, Mary Jane (Robert) Patterson of Mentor; daughter-in-law, Cathy Maffett; stepdaughters, Joyce and Carol; and son-in-law, Paul.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Elsie Maffett; son, Rodney Maffett; and parents, Charles A. and Anna Maffett.
Funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Monday at the Brunner Sanden Deitrick Funeral Home & Cremation Center 8466 Mentor Ave., Mentor.
The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until the time of the service Monday at the funeral home. Interment will be held at Western Reserve Memorial Gardens in Chester Township.
