Edythe B. (Austin) Murphy Obituary
Edythe B. (Austin) Murphy, age 80, of Clarence, N.Y. formerly of Chardon, passed away at her home February 9, 2014, after fighting a courageous two year battle with cancer.
She was born in Struthers, to Clyde H. and Rose Ann Austin.
Edythe was raised in Chardon, and graduated from Chardon High School in 1951. Edythe enjoyed friends, played on the basketball team and pursued her love of music playing saxophone in the band. She also worked at the Orchid door beauty salon in Chardon owned by her older sister. Edythe married Peter G. Murphy in 1956, and built a home in Chardon before moving to Clarence, N.Y. in 1964. She was successful working in bookkeeping and payroll for General Motors in Cleveland and then in the construction business with her husband and partners in Akron, New York.
Wherever she lived she made it home. She was active with her church community at Holy Cross Lutheran Church. Over the years she held positions as Treasurer, Elder, played her saxophone and sang in the choir. Edythe often found joy with friends and family hosting get-togethers and annual events at her home. She loved working in her yard, tending to her birdfeeders and watching the wildlife that she welcomed. Edythe will be deeply missed by her family and friends.
She is survived by her son, Patrick Murphy; daughter, Bridget (James) Szczepanski; granddaughter, Brittney Rose Murphy; step-grandchildren, Michael (Kelly) and Nicholas Szczepanski; sisters, Nina Tracey and Cheryl Austin; nephew, Mitchel Clark; nieces, Ivy Dale Austin, Janice (Irving) Thomas, Edythe Lynn Caltrider and their families.
Preceded in death is her sister and brother-in-law, Martha (Berge) Tookman; brother and sister-in-law, Clyde (Ivy) Austin.
A Memorial Service will be held 11 a.m. Monday, April 28 at Burr Funeral Home, 116 South Street (On Rt. 44, 500' south of Rt. 6/Chardon Square) Chardon.
Visitation is from 10 to 11a.m. prior to the service.
