Gertrude E. ""Gert"" (Kleinfeld) Berkey, 79, of Hambden Township, passed away May 18, 2013, at Briar Hill Care Center in Middlefield.
Born March 4, 1934, in Cleveland, to Herman and Margaret (Kellip) Kleinfeld, she had been a longtime area resident.
Gert had worked at Conley's Department Store in Hambden Township as the office manager; she then went to work at the Yum Yum Tree in Chardon as the assistant manager before retiring to spend more time with her family. She enjoyed staying in touch with all of her former co-workers and friends she met along the way; meeting for lunch once a month. Gert greatly enjoyed her days out with the ""girls.""
She loved family functions, especially Sunday dinners, picnics, holidays, shopping and vacations at the beach in Florida and North Carolina.
Gert is survived by her daughters, Jean (Thomas) Thompson of Thompson and Joan (Keith) Herron of Middlefield; son, James (Kim) of Hartsgrove; grandchildren, Jennifer (Ty) Pilarczyk, Alicia (Louis DuPlago) Herron and Kyle, Logan and Mason Berkey; great-grandchildren, Emily Harmon, and Tyler and Taelyn Berkey; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Eugene Berkey; and five brothers.
The funeral service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 22, 2013, at the Burr Funeral Home, 116 South St. (Route 44, 500 feet south of Route 6/Chardon Square), Chardon. Private family burial will follow.
Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
