He was born March 6, 1960, in Painesville, and spent most of his life as a cement finisher starting his working career with R.W. Sidley, Inc. as a teenager.
James enjoyed fishing, raising dogs, gardening, cooking, all types of sports, spending quality time with his grandson (many times at the Fairgrounds, learning about animals and horseback riding.) He also enjoyed spending time, weekly time with his family. He cherished children and dogs, and they cherished him in return.
He leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Julli (nee Scott) to whom he was united in marriage on June 30, 2012; his parents, James and Louise Smith of Painesville; daughter, Tiffany Smith of Cleveland; niece/daughter, Karissa Coverson of Clarksville, Tenn.; stepson, Ryan Scott of Akron; siblings, Julie Cunningham of Cheverly, Md.; Cathy Smith-Hussain (Safdar) of Jacksonville, Fla.; Elisa Smith-Sanchez (Paul) of Painesville; Jeffery Smith of Painesville; grandson, James Gadomski of Painesville; grandmother, Minnie Banks of Jacksonville, Fla.; nephew, Blake Andre Smith of Cleveland. He is also survived by numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, life-long friends and his Japanese Akita, Tonka.
James was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Will and Millie Smith, and maternal grandparents, Edward and Ella Watkins and William Burgess.
Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, March 27, from 11 a.m. to noon at the New Hope Baptist Church, 428 W. Jackson St., Painesville. Homegoing service will be at noon, immediately afterward. Elder William H. Cooper Sr. of Holy Grounds Church of God in Concord and Rev. Roderick A. Coffee I of Union Community Church in Concord will officiate the service.
Interment will be at Riverside Cemetery in Painesville.
