Karla Lois Bickel, 67, of Mentor, entered the eternal joy of God's presence in heaven on April 13, 2013, in Minerva.|
Karla was born in White Cloud, Mich., to the Rev. Ottomar and Ruth Bickel on Feb. 11, 1946. She grew
up in Painesville, where her father served as pastor of Zion Lutheran Church in Painesville. She graduated from Harvey High School in 1964 and earned an associate degree from Lakeland College and a BA in education from Concordia University, Seward, Neb.
An excellent, caring teacher, she loved to teach children about the Lord Jesus Christ. For several years she taught at her own Sunrise Nursery School in Madison. Later she taught primary grades at Lutheran schools in Missouri, New Orleans and New York City.
In the 1990s, she wrote and hosted a children's radio program, ""Charity Clown's Story Circle."" She authored and illustrated ""Heart Petals on the Hearth,"" a book of imaginative stories for children. She also wrote articles for area newspapers, taught piano lessons and served as a foster parent. Karla nurtured many friendships and participated in several Christian churches in Lake and Geauga counties.
Karla is survived by her sisters, Mary (Jim) Klein of Indianapolis, Ind.; Susan (Jim) Crawford of Minerva; Eunice (Craig) Hester of Custer, S.D.; brother, Philip (Julie) Bickel of Bloomington, Minn.; 14 nieces and nephews; and 20 great-nieces and great-nephews.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Ruth Bickel; and father, Ottomar Bickel.
A memorial service will be 7 p.m. Friday, May 31 at Zion Lutheran Church, 508 Mentor Ave., Painesville. Visitation is at 6 p.m. and fellowship time will follow the service.
Burial arrangements are being made by Spear-Mulqueeny Funeral Home, Painesville. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Zion Lutheran Church in Painesville or Victory Baptist Church in Mentor.
The family wishes to express their gratitude for the loving care given by Hospice of the Western Reserve, Alliance Visiting Nurse and Hospice, and Minerva Elder Care Center.
