Liguori J. Schell, 91, of Kirtland, passed away Wednesday, July 31, 2013, at The Cleveland Clinic.

Born Nov. 15, 1921, in Cleveland, he had lived in Euclid and Geneva before moving to Lake County 33 years ago, living in Kirtland.
He served as a first lieutenant in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II ""The Big One,"" was a B-17 pilot of ""Bouncin Baby,"" and awarded ""Lucky Bastards Certificate"" for surviving 35 missions, Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal with four Oak Clusters, EAME Theatre Ribbon with five Battle Stars and the Distinguished Unit Citation with one Oak Leaf Cluster. Mr. Schell was a graduate of East Tech High School and after the Air Force, attended The Ohio State University on the G.I. Bill. He was a founding member of Ellicottville Ski Club, an original member of the HiRise Ski Club, and member of the Kirtland V.F.W. and Mentor Lagoons Yacht Club. Mr. Schell was affectionately known as ""Old Man of the Mountain,"" was an avid skier and racing skier receiving national trophies, enjoyed entertaining friends with his original ukulele songs and loved boating, fishing and good times at Put-in-Bay. He was also an accomplished grape grower for Welch's and a professional hockey player with the Muncie, Ind., Chiefs.
Mr. Schell worked as an industrial engineer. He founded and served as president of Induction, Brazing & Soldering, and also worked at Hi-Tech Metal Company in Cleveland for six years.
He was the beloved husband of 43 years to Kathleen D. (nee Fantur) Schell; loving father of Christine S. (John) Barrows of Gahanna; cherished grandfather of Hope ""Maggie"" Barrows; and uncle of Charlene (Ron) DeLucia.
He was preceded in death by his son, Eric J. Schell; parents, Liguori and Ella (nee Wahl) Schell; sister, Eleanor Smith; and brother-in-law, Walter Smith.
Family will receive friends from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 7, 2013, with prayer services to immediately follow at 11:30 a.m. at the McMahon-Coyne-Vitantonio Funeral Home, 38001 Euclid Ave., Willoughby. The Rev. Robert A. Gaston will officiate.
