Lillian Jean (Doblekar) Sustar, 89, passed away Nov. 8, 2013, at Hillcrest Hospital in Mayfield Heights after a brief illness.
Lillian was born Feb. 24, 1924, in Cleveland. Her mother, Frances Berna, was a strong woman who loved her children, Lillian and Frank (deceased), deeply. Her father, Alois ""Louis"" Doblekar, passed on to Lil his love of reading and discussing politics. A self-proclaimed tomboy, Lil spent her childhood playing baseball, climbing trees, fishing and getting into mischief with her friends. ""Diamond Lil"" enjoyed dancing at the Slovenian Hall and attending Slovenian Singing School every Saturday.
Lillian married John, the love of her life, on Aug. 29, 1942. The childhood friends spent many evenings dancing the polka and jitterbug together. They were the proud parents of four sons, Roger, Jim, Dennis and Bob. The couple enjoyed entertaining friends, both in Cleveland and in Florida, where they maintained vacation homes throughout their marriage. They were married for 64 years when John passed away in March 2006. Lil enjoyed cooking, decorating and maintaining an impeccably clean and organized home.
Lillian is survived by her sons, Roger (Judy), Jim, Bob (Sharon); and many dear friends. ""Grandma Candy"" will be missed deeply by her grandchildren, Chris, Alyson (Chris), Nicole (Ralph), Nina (Dave), Rob (Emily), Tom, John, Laurie (Christina), Samantha (Brian) and Scarlett; and 13 great-grandchildren.
Lillian was preceded in death by her husband, John; and beloved son, Dennis. Lil left this world, surrounded by family, anxious to go ""home"" to be with her love, John. They are dancing together again.
Family will receive friends to pay tribute to and celebrate the life of Lillian from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the DeJohn-Flynn-Mylott Funeral Home of Willoughby Hills, 28890 Chardon Road.
Relatives and friends are invited to meet for the Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2013, at Our Lady Chapel (Gilmour Academy, 34001 Cedar Road, Gates Mills). Entombment will follow at All Souls Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Lillian's memory to Gilmour Academy/Our Lady Chapel, 34001 Cedar Road, Gates Mills, OH 44040.
