Brett John Bailey, 42, of Mentor, Ohio, died suddenly at home Wednesday, March 5, 2014, from a cardiac episode.
Brett was born April 27, 1971, in Elmira, NY, the youngest of 5 children, to his parents Phyllis C. and John R. Bailey who predeceased him. Brett graduated from the Elmira Free Academy in 1989 and The Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, NY in 1992. A true artist of food, he pursued his career in Grand Cayman Island with Chef Tell, then on to Charleston, SC at Magnolia's, Bully Hill Winery on Keuka Lake, NY, and next became the Test Kitchen Chef for Marcel Desaulniers of Williamsburg, VA, Author of Death by Chocolate. Brett assisted in the development and publication of 7 of Chef Desaulniers' cookbooks. Upon his death Brett was working as a private chef throughout the Cleveland, Ohio area as well as in Naples, FL, and was most proud of his recent culinary work for The M Cellars Winery in Geneva, OH.
Brett was a lover of life, people, and the outdoors. An avid sportsman, Brett excelled at his favorites: Motocross racing, fishing, hunting, water and snow skiing. He was never happier than when doing these things with his family and close friends and especially in his favorite spot on Sanibel Island in Florida.
Brett had many accomplishments in his short life and was most proud of receiving the Havoline Sportsman Award from the Virginia Championship Hare Scramble Series for 2008.
Brett was a devoted brother and uncle, beloved by the family he leaves behind: brother, Dr. Jeffrey (Dawn) Bailey of Mentor OH; sisters, Pamela (James) Sullivan of Portsmouth, NH and Sanibel, FL, Brenda (Philip) Scinto of Mentor, OH, Bonnisue (Timothy) Angulas of Mont Vernon, NH; and his nieces and nephews, Erin (Todd) Gonzales, Caitlin and Sean Sullivan, Ian and Jenna Bailey, Hanna and Sara Scinto, Madison, Grace and Jake Angulas; and great-niece Lindsay Gonzales.
There will be a private family memorial service.
