H. Robert "Bob" Allshouse, 79, of Conneaut, peacefully passed on to his Next Great Adventure Saturday evening, May 3, 2014, just two days shy of completing his 80th trip around the sun.
Bob was born in Youngstown, on May 5, 1934, the son of Harold W. and Pauline (Nelson) Allshouse.
Bob graduated in 1957 from Youngstown University Dana School of Music with a Bachelor's degree and continued his post graduate education at Wayne State, Eastern Michigan, and Kent State Universities.
He served with the U.S. Army from 1958 to 1960 during which time he played first clarinet, lead alto sax, and jazz tenor sax with the 13th Army Band at Ft. Knox, KY, and was baritone soloist and assistant conductor of the 2nd Army Chorus in Ft. Meade, MD, performing on the Ed Sullivan Show as well as touring the U.S.
Bob began his career in 1960 at Mineral Ridge, OH, teaching music K-12. In 1968 he found his forever home in the Ashtabula/Conneaut area arriving to become the Choral Music Director at Ashtabula High School, retiring in 1986 as the Assistant Director of the AHS Band.
Upon his arrival in Ashtabula County he very quickly became known for his musical professionalism and his ability to play any style of music on most any instrument. He played with many local bands including High Society, Sonny Hayes Orchestra, Ashtabula Symphonic Band, Kilpi Band and The Blues Project.
He found many avenues to share his love and knowledge of music with others including working as an on-air announcer for WQLN radio in Erie, PA, teaching saxophone at Mercyhurst College, and choir director at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Conneaut.
On August 5, 1970, Bob accepted he was powerless over alcohol and his life had become unmanageable. From that time forward he has maintained his sobriety and worked tirelessly to carry the message to those who are still suffering with addictions by sharing his strength, hope, and experience with others.
He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Susan (Waddle) Allshouse, and numerous cousins.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents.
A Celebration of Life will be held in his honor from 6 to 9 p.m., on Tuesday, May 20, 2014, at the Conneaut Community Center for the Arts, 1025, Buffalo St., Conneaut, OH.
Memorial contributions may also be made in Bob's name to the Art Center. Envelopes will be available at the Art Center or at the Marcy Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 208 Liberty St., Conneaut, OH, which is serving the family.
