Richard A. "Dick" Epaves Obituary
Richard A. "Dick" Epaves, age 83, of Mentor, formerly of Timberlake, died Friday, August 8, 2014, at Emeritus at Newell Creek, with his family by his side.
He was born February 1, 1931, in Cleveland, and was a veteran of the U.S. Navy.
Dr. Epaves was a CPA and was an accounting professor at Fenn College and Cleveland State University, until his retirement.
During his years at CSU, he established and taught a CPA Review course that helped hundreds of students pass the CPA exam. He was a frequent recipient of the student voted "Professor of the Year" and also did a brief stint as acting chairman of the accounting department. He preferred the classroom over administration.
Dr. Epaves also was an active member of the Ohio Society of CPAs and the AICPA. He was respected as a text book editor and was published in professional journals.
After his retirement, he and his wife, Barbara, established Sterling Age, a business that they operated together for many years. When that adventure had run its course, they moved on to genealogy, where together they combed courthouse records throughout the Midwest. He was a member of the Samuel Huntington Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR).
Dick belonged to St. Justin Martyr Catholic Church, in Eastlake, for over forty years. He was actively involved in establishing Parish Council there and served as that organization's first chairman.
Dick was a proud patriot who lived his life based on the belief that an honorable life was one prioritized God, Family and Country.
Survivors include his daughters, Susan (James) Karel and Pegg Lyttle of Concord Township; grandchildren, Dennis, Brian, Amanda and Alexis Karel; Brooke (Chris) Lyttle, Ed Lyttle and Margie McParland; and great-granddaughter, Amelia Grace Mosack.
Preceding Dick in death is his wife of 59 years, Barbara A. Epaves (deceased December 23, 2013); parents, Oliver and Elva Epaves; sisters, Olive Fox and Elva Wickline; and brother, Robert Epaves.
Funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m., Tuesday, at St. Gabriel Catholic Church, 9925 Johnnycake Ridge Road, in Concord Township. Please meet at the church and wear your patriotic colors.
Entombment will be in All Souls Cemetery, Chardon.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to St. Justin Martyr Church, 35781 Stevens Blvd., Eastlake, Ohio 44095 or SAR Foundation, 1000 South Fourth St., Louisville, KY 40203.
Arrangements entrusted to Brunner Sanden Deitrick Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 8466 Mentor, Ave., Mentor, Ohio 44060. You may offer condolences at www.brunners.com.
