William John Derus, 71, died June 5, 2011, at his residence.|
Born Nov. 23, 1939, in Cleveland, he lived in Mentor for the past 40 years. Previously, he lived in Willowick.
Mr. Derus was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War, serving as a helicopter pilot.
He enjoyed playing the guitar, fishing and crossword puzzles. He had attended St. Bede the Venerable Catholic Church in Mentor. He also had been a member of the band "The Savoys."
Mr. Derus had worked in sales for Kerr Lakeside Inc. for more than 30 years.
Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Barbara (Bogdany); sons, Jeffrey (Rhonda) Derus of Gainesville, Fla., Scott (Michelle) Derus of Omaha, Neb., and Gregory (Michelle) Derus of Madison; grandchildren, Sarah, Melissa, Myles, Jacob, Raymond and Gillian; and sister, Carol (Jim) Bateman.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Adam and Florence Derus.
Memorial Mass will be 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Bede the Venerable Catholic Church, 9114 Lake Shore Blvd., Mentor. Inurnment will be in Mentor Cemetery.
Family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Brunner Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 8466 Mentor Ave., Mentor.
