Clarence F. Sindy Obituary
Patriot, inventor, author, and volunteer Clarence F. Sindy, 91, of Willoughby, passed away quietly Friday, Feb. 1, 2013, at Fairmount Center in Willoughby.
Born Sept. 28, 1921, in Cleveland, as Clarence Francis Sindledecker, he changed his last name to Sindy in the 1940s.
He graduated from Collinwood High School in 1941, and was later inducted into the Hall of Fame. While in 9th grade, he and some friends formed the Alpha RHOs at the North East YMCA. After graduation, he began an apprenticeship with General Electric.
Mr. Sindy served in the U.S. Army Air Corps and the 66th Army Signal Corps from 1942 to 1946. He served in the Philippines, Japan, Germany, and France during World War ll, earning the Purple Heart along with ribbons for the American Theater, European Theater with Bronze Star, Asiatic Theater, Good Conduct medal, and Victory medal. After the war, he returned to work for General Electric.
As an engineer at GE, he earned four patents for GE Equipment and became a member of the GE Elfun Society before, retiring after 40 years with GE. He also served as president of the Lake County Council on Aging, the Browning Senior Center, the Willoughby Masonic Hi Twelve Luncheon Club, and the Arrowhead Shore Club. He was a member of the Willoughby Masonic Lodge 302 (Scottish Rite 32nd Degree Mason, Knights Templar) and played baseball with the Huffers-n-Puffers league of the American Legion Post 214, and had been an Elk for 46 years.
Mr. Sindy also authored and published two books when he was in his 80s: "Willoughby The First 150 Years" and "Collinwood OH! Collinwood."
Although his golfing, bowling, and baseball playing days were behind him, Mr. Sindy was an avid reader and loved playing pinochle at the Browning Senior Center.
Mr. Sindy was preceded in death by his parents, Gilbert and Edith Sindledecker; his beloved first wife, Carol May (Sylvanus) Sindy; and Alan Alisaje, an AFS foreign exchange student from the Philippines.
He is survived by his wife, Heather (McLeod) of Willoughby; sisters, Joan (Joseph) Polakowski of Mentor and June Hubish of Madison; children, Janet (Frank) Jodlowski of Kirtland and Robert (Marjorie) Sindy of Granger, Ind.; grandchildren, Jinny Jo (Tom) Harris, Frank (Lora) Jodlowski, Robert Sindy, and Nicole Sindy; and great-grandchildren, Tommi Jo, Berri Rae, and Benjamin Harris, and Samantha and Jessica Jodlowski.
At present, no solemn memorial service is planned.
