Thomas R. Yenco, age 90, of Mayfield Heights for the past 61 years, died Monday, Feb. 25, 2013, at Geauga Regional Hospital in Claridon Township.
He was born Sept. 18, 1922, in New Salem, Pa.
Mr. Yenco was a retired telegraph operator for the former New York Central and Conrail railroads for 35 years.
He was an avid Cleveland Indians and Browns fan. Thomas was a U.S. Army World War II veteran, serving in the European Theatre. While serving in the European theatre, just before D-Day, Thomas met in person the Queen of England. From that meeting, he kept in contact with the Queen and she referred to him as "Tommie."
Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Ruth H. (Phelps) Yenco; son, Terry (Linda Bodi) Yenco of Chardon; grandchildren, Chris Wranna and Suzanne (Donald) Folk; son-in-law, Robert Wranna; brothers, Larry Yenco, Jerry Yenco, Robert (Barbara) Yenco and Charles (June) Yenco.
Preceding Thomas in death are his daughter, Ruth Ann Wranna; parents, Steven and Barbara Yenco; and siblings, Pauline Valida, Albert Yenco, Agnes Radosovich, Betty Russell, Marge Faluske, Steven Yenco and Marty Yenco.
A celebration of Thomas's life will be held 5:30 p.m. Saturday at Brunner Sanden Deitrick Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 8466 Mentor Ave., Mentor, OH 44060.
The family will receive friends from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
