K9 Officer Kubo Casto, 11, of Richmond Heights, passed away suddenly Sunday, March 24, 2013.
He was born Nov. 20, 2001, in Germany, and was adopted by the Casto family in March 2003.
Kubo was certified in narcotic detection, tracking, criminal apprehension along with building/area searches and during his illustrious 10-year career. Alongside his partner, Patrolman Tim Casto, he was responsible numerous times for locating cash and narcotics, making the community safer for its residents.
Officer Kubo assisted with tracking and locating a 7-year-old girl who disappeared from school and was also responsible for locating an Alzheimer's patient who went missing from his home.
Along with the 13 criminal apprehensions and arrests that Officer Kubo is credited for, he also was known for his amazing ability to quell and disperse a crowd which made him invaluable in many situations.
Throughout Kubo's 10 years on the Richmond Heights Police Force, he performed countless demonstrations for D.A.R.E., daycare and outreach centers, churches and schools. He also competed in the N.E. Ohio ""Top Dog"" competition in 2009 and 2010. Kubo took ""Top Dog"" honors in 2009 and placed first in 2010.
While Kubo's position on the police force demanded respect on the job, at home things were completely different. He enjoyed being the ""family pet"" of the Casto family. He played with his toys and had his own room.
His survivors are his parents, Tim and Kelly Casto; his sister, Brittany; and his favorite niece, Olivia.
Family will receive friends to pay tribute to and celebrate the life of Officer Kubo from 2 to 3 p.m. Tuesday, April 2, 2013, followed by a Memorial Service at 3 p.m. conducted by Pastor Michael Marino, at DeJohn-Flynn-Mylott Funeral Home of Willoughby Hills, 28890 Chardon Road (between Bishop Road and Route 91).
