Private family services will be held for Philip Kovalchuk, 84, of Eastlake.
Mr. Kovalchuk passed away at home in his sleep Sunday, March 31, 2013.
The youngest of seven children, he was born Nov. 26, 1928, in Cleveland to Philip and Stella Kovalchuk.
Phil was a graduate of Baldwin-Wallace College in Berea, where he played football. He earned his Master of Arts degree from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland.
He always said he was very lucky to love two wonderful women in his life, both of whom have preceded him in death. He met his beloved wife, Ruth, at Baldwin-Wallace, where they performed together in a play. Together, they raised a family and shared in life's joys and challenges. In his later years, Phil met Maureen Gorni, who became his partner in bridge and in life.
Phil served his country in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict from 1950 to 1954.
Mr. Kovalchuk taught social studies and history at his alma mater, the former East High School in Cleveland, where he also served as a coach and athletic director.
He loved cards, games, sports, theater and music, and he enjoyed his friends and activities at the Mentor Senior Center. He was loyal, caring and strong, and faced life with humor and humility. His greatest joy and commitment in life was family; he was the center of our family, and we were blessed to have him.
Survivors are his loving children, Stella (Paul) Naegely of Voorhees, N.J., Anne (Michael) Rosen of London, England, John (April) Kovalchuk of Leroy Township and Mike (Amy) Kovalchuk of Charlotte, N.C. He was also the proud and devoted grandfather of Donald, Mark and Philip Naegely, Rachel Rosen, Jeremy, Jessica, Sara and Emma Kovalchuk, and Michael, Jacob and Kyle Kovalchuk.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, April 4, 2013, at Davis-Babcock Funeral Home, 4154 Clark Ave., Willoughby.
In lieu of flowers, the family encourages contributions to Hospice of the Western Reserve, Inc., 17876 St. Clair Ave., Cleveland, OH 44110-2602.
