John R. Washco, 85, of Mentor-on-the-Lake, died Thursday April 18, 2013, at Lake Health West Medical Center in Willoughby.
He was born March 25, 1928, in Masontown, Pa. He was a former resident of Uniontown, Pa., and Mentor.
Mr. Washco was a graduate of North Union High School in 1946. As a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps., serving in the Korean War, he was a staff sergeant, who fought at the Battle of the Chosen Reservoir from 1950 to 1951.
Mr. Washco was a retired machinist for the former Gibbs Wire & Steel Co. Inc. in Painesville, where after working for 24 years he retired in 1995.
He was a founding member of St. Bede the Venerable Catholic Church, Mentor, where he served as an usher and Eucharistic minister.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Theresa J. "Terri" (Ludwick); son, John (Marianne) Washco of Geneva; grandchildren, Jason (Ayana) Washco, Rebecca K. Washco, Joe Misseri, John S. Washco and Dana (fiancé Curtis Sparks) Misseri; three great-grandchildren, Gunner, Wyatt and Jack; sister, Betty Jacobs; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Susan Washco; and brothers, Steven and Edward Washco.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 9:45 a.m. Saturday at St. Bede the Venerable Catholic Church, 9114 Lakeshore Blvd., Mentor, where the family will receive friends in the chapel from 8:30 a.m. until the Mass at 9:45 a.m. Officiants for the Mass will be Bishop A. Edward Pevec and Fr. Tim Plavac. Interment will be in Mentor Cemetery.
