William D. ""Bill"" Landeg, 81, of Mentor and North Port, Fla., passed peacefully away at home, Friday, May 3, 2013, surrounded by his loving family.
He was born Nov. 29, 1931, in Cleveland.
Bill spent his early years in Brooklyn, N.Y., before returning to the Cleveland area. He graduated from Euclid High School in 1950, where he participated in football and baseball. He was also an amateur boxer, having won the Middle Weight Golden Gloves championship in 1951. Bill served in the U.S. Navy as a radio man from 1951 to 1955 during the Korean War. He attended Fenn College, majoring in engineering and surveying. He was a former owner of Frank A. Thomas, Engineers and Surveyors. In 1975, he formed his own company, Lake, Inc., Engineers and Surveyors, and worked there until his retirement in 2000.
He was also a long time member and past president of the North East Ohio Society of Professional Engineers (NEOSPE). He ran their annual golf tournament at Pine Ridge Country Club for many years. He had a Masonic affiliation with Willoughby Lodge 302 F&AM and was raised to Master Mason in September 1961. He was also a co-owner of Roseland Farms, where they raised thoroughbred horses that were raced at the Thistledown racetrack. Being an avid golfer, Bill belonged to Tam-A-Rac Country Club, where he was president in 1972. He was also a member of Pine Ridge Country Club for 22 years, Madison Country Club for 10 years and Bobcat Trail Country Club in North Port, Fla.
Bill was very devoted to his family. He was married to his wife, Marilyn (Abbott) Landeg for 61 years. His children are W. David (Juanita) Landeg of Leroy, Bruce R. (Berit) Landeg of Mentor and Cynthia J. (Ernie) Layton of Mentor. His grandchildren are Ryan (Kate) Layton, Rory (Xiaxi Liu) Layton, Kyle Layton and Mollie Layton, all of Mentor, Anne-Marie Landeg of Chicago, Erik (Trish Murphy) Landeg of Columbus, Robert (Amy) Landeg of Houston, Texas, Jackie (Karen) Isabella of Perry and Christina (Bob) Spicer of Mentor. His great-grandchildren are Maya, Reese and Mason Layton, Lisbeth Landeg and Lillian Layton.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Gladys Landeg of Euclid and formerly of Wales.
The funeral service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Brunner Sanden Deitrick Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 8466 Mentor Ave., Mentor.
The family will receive friends from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Interment will be at Mentor Cemetery.
